The System

test John explains at, Rothamsted Open Innovation Forum, 18 January 2017, the current advanced Airponix Ltd's system e.g. the current proposed fog generation system uses 93 times less energy to operate than the next best alternative and mentions the 13 beneficial functions. It should enable for the first time the growing of staple crops such as wheat and rice economically and hopefully should allow the solving of 'world hunger'.

Crop stresses are caused by problems e.g. drought, floods, high and low air temperatures, soil loss, high winds, lightning-caused fires, lack of fertiliser, disease, insect pests, large hailstones etc. The Airponix® aeroponic system, covered by 3 patents, is designed to protect plants from stress and harm as cost-effectively and as efficiently as possible, optimise growth conditions to maximise productivity per unit area of (soil-less) ground, while also minimising labour inputs. The system is also designed to operate with a low environmental impact (e.g. a low energy, chemical & fresh water use).

OPERATING PRINCIPLES
- Lightweight plastic film plant enclosures attached to tensioned wires and ropes held clear off the ground to avoid rodent attack, flood damage, optimal picking height, etc.
- Water, nutrient and RNA delivery to plants in fogs produced by novel fog generators (patented) <20 µm-sized droplets which travel through growth chambers.
- Fogs humidify, cool, frost protect (latent heat of fusion effect) & reflect heat (albedo effect)
- Electrically charged fogs (patented) stimulate plant growth and increase crop yields
- Growing conditions automatically controlled and remotely monitored to ensure growth conditions are maintained as near optimal as possible at all times
- Complete crop growth cycle stages involving seeding, pollinating, harvesting, removal of crops & straw collection automatically for successive harvests over several years

ADVANTAGES
- Water efficient: +85% less than field cultivation
- High degree of control over crop growing conditions & radically reduced grower risk levels
- High productivity per unit area of ground (10 to 30 times higher than normal e.g. potatoes)
- Faster growth - allowing year round multi-cropping
- Soilless and suitable for use on steep slopes/rocky terrain with no ground preparation
- Low environmental impact and safe - no chemicals
- Low capital and operating costs - lightweight (components are easy to carry) and low labour requirement
- Resilient - e.g. designed to cope with most climate change effects and side effects
- Utilisation of fertiliser 100% - e.g. no loss to soil or ground water contamination by nitrates
- Adaptable - wide range of food crops can be grown e.g. rice, potatoes, wheat, oats, etc.

Each growth chamber is 30m long x 1.2m and suspended off the ground, minimising material use as apart from end posts, all in tension. In order to get access, neighbouring chambers are tilted away from eachother to open up an isle.

This shows that the growth of chamber can be suspended above rough hilly terrain. This will aid the self harvesting process As shown in top left one end of growth chamber can be lifted up above the other to allow the dried produce to fall down to the lower end where collected.

The first insert sketch shows how in one hectare you get 83 of these growth chambers side-by-side and three in the length giving a total of 250 units. The second insert sketch shows cross sections of the growth chamber for the various different crops such as rice, wheat, potatoes and grapevines.
