Deep Borehole Disposal  (DBD) of high-level nuclear waste is generally considered to be the safest and preferred option with very few if any feasible alternatives with added advantage that wells can be drilled at source where waste is produced (per photo below). The concept was first considered in the 1950s but rejected as was beyond existing drilling capabilities.

Plasma Drilling technology however now gives one the capability to not only drill wells economically and in practical time scales, but to the required depths i.e. >5 km and diameters >0.5 m which previously has not been possible. In addition the rock above the nuclear  waste can be fused to guarantee sealing with no possible route back to surface for any fluids or gases - forever.
